The Lottery Book Review
October 1st, 2009 by djohnson1
I just recently read the book, The Lottery, written by Shirley Jackson. This book is written on about a sixth grade level. This book takes place in a very small town with a population of about three-hundred. Just about the most appreciated value of the small town is work. Women only work at home, not within the economy, women are not as important to the family as men. Young boys have also learned the value of work after their fathers, play for them is very rare. The lottery takes place with the hierarchy within the settlement. Mr. Summers conducts the lottery, he is the owner of the biggest business in this town, the coal business.
This book is about many families that go to a hierarchy and play a game called the lottery. If someone from your family is chosen to draw, and they are not there, someone else from your family will be chosen to draw for them. In my opinion, this is not a good book for people in my grade to read, because of the level it is written on, however, I would recommend this book to younger children.
